Lionsgate — the Canadian-founded studio already busy shutting Canadian customers out of its own Lionsgate Limited steelbooks — might not be a Canadian studio much longer at all. As of this week, French media conglomerate Bolloré and its production arm Banijay are reportedly eyeing a strategic acquisition of Lionsgate, aiming to buy their way into the U.S. studio system and Lionsgate’s back catalog.
Lionsgate has also been on its own acquisition spree, adding Banijay and Mediawan to its portfolio — so this isn’t a struggling studio getting rescued, it’s two media giants circling each other, with an enormous physical media catalog caught in the middle of whatever deal gets made.
Every ownership change is a risk for physical media. New owners mean new priorities, and catalog titles are usually the first thing renegotiated, relicensed, or quietly left behind.
